Bikes and Books – Ride For Reading

On October 9th more than 20 volunteer riders gathered at Go-Ride bike shop for a Ride for Reading event. Ride for Reading is a National program with the mission of helping children in low income areas become healthy and literate by donating books via bicycle.

This particular Ride for Reading event was in support of Roosevelt Elementary, a Title 1 low income school, in Granite School District.

The volunteer riders munched on donuts and drank coffee provided by Go-Ride while filling their backpacks with books to be taken to Roosevelt Elementary.

-Arrival At Roosevelt-

A short 15-minute bike ride away, riders were greeted by the cheers and high fives of over 450 Roosevelt Elementary students.

The excitement from the students, many who do not own any of their own books, was infectious.

After taking a pledge to read their books not once, but twice; students selected two books from the donated books.

In the end, 1500 books were given to the students or donated to the school. Special thank to Shelly Wedge for coordinating this event and to all the volunteers who helped deliver and distribute the books to the students at Roosevelt Elementary!
